australia group

I don’t normally write about cricket, simply due to the fact that I don’t usually like reading about cricket - it’s just not as fun after it’s been transformed into little shapes on a piece of paper. But extreme times call for extreme measures. I’ve kept my mouth shut over some ridiculous events that have happened in recent years such as that farce of a word cup final in 2007 between Australia and Sri Lanka and a few other events. The sad fact is that politics amongst other things is screwing world cricket up. The Australian cricket team could and has got away with what I can only describe as the equivalent of murder. For many years now, the Australia Group have been the leading name in world cricket. Group refers to their talented cricket team, their even more talented cricket board and not-so-talented ICC umpires; no names mentioned, every cricket-follower knows who they are. Malcolm Gladwell tells us that everything has a ‘Tipping Point’ and I’m glad that world cricket is drawing ever closer to this mysterious phenomenon.

With all due respect, it was cowardly for the Sri Lankan board to take Muralitharan’s bans without causing a huge uproar. It’s reassuring to see that Murali fought back though. Nothing really seemed to happen after this though, and once again, the little folks at the ICC skipped away with their menacing grins growing ever larger.

Pakistan did a bit better, managing to end Hair’s days of umpiring in test cricket. The main factor here though was the lack of support for poor Inzy from the Pakistani board but I’m glad they had the guts to walk out on that test match, albeit against England who are only a majority stake holder in Australia Group.

This time though, I’m glad the BCCI and the Indian players are taking a stand against Harbhajan Singh’s recent 3-match ban and the Sunday-League level of umpiring the series has witnessed. This is just the start though, world cricket is steadily edging ever closer to the tipping point and when this point is breached, peace and harmony shall rule the fields of world cricket again!

I have been watching the unfolding saga with great dismay. Australian cricket is a bonafide powerhouse but their ‘win at all cost’ mantra needs to be amended to ‘win at all cost within the spirit of the game’
